The ski-track of Russia
Second weekend of February, Arkhangelsk The main ski event of Russia takes place
in many of the Russian towns. It is an event for everyone, for amateur skiers
as well as for professionals. People from 2 to 70 years of age take part and
compete in personal and family contests. Participation in the event in Arkhangelsk
allows one to combine a visit to the cultural and historical capital of the
Russian North with active vocation in picturesque nooks of the region. It is
a possibility to learn more about the Russian Pomor culture and culture of Nenets
nomads who are having their camps in the area during the winter season.
“Craftsmen’s festival”
June, second week-end, Kargopol
Kargopol’s guests have a chance to come along with the real folk culture. In
the streets one can meet people in traditionally made or real garments from
different regions of Russia and the Russian North. Various master-classes are
being held, such as birch bark wickerwork, rug-doll or clay toy making, bakery.
Folklore concerts are everywhere. The whole town is filled with atmosphere of
fair, where one can buy traditional handicraft as well as natural products.
Humor and folklore festival of Kozma Prutkov
July, Solvychegodsk, Kotlas district
The main occasions of the event happen on the bank of the beautiful river Vychegda.
During the festival various activities take place across the town: timber trade
auction, sports competitions, contests (literature, handicrafts’, best symbol
of the festival, amateur performances, wooden sculpture, and song composition).
The Fair-festival is full of joy, interesting communication, rich trade of traditional
handicraft goods. One can buy anything here.
Honey festival in the capital of honey
Middle of August, Ustyansky district The Honey festival has in only few years
developed into an international craftsmen event. It collects beekeepers from
the Northwestern part of Russia and countries of the Barents region, as well
as admirers of honey and north-Russian traditions. The festival houses a lot
of other events, including competitions in woodcarving and architecture, master-class
in making boats, and competition for the best quality honey. Local folklore
groups perform for the visitors and make the celebration even more exciting.
The peculiarity of the event is that it happens in several villages of one region.
The guests thus get a unique chance to visit more places and get acquainted
with the traditions and life of different villages by participating in the festivities
together with the local population.
