Azeri masters
The wonder of the jewelry art has rightly been called the decorative shield
from Damascus steel, invariably attracting the attention of the visitors of
the Armoury of Moscow Kremlin. This shield was made by an Azeri jeweler of the
XVI century, Usta Muhammed Momin. On its surface, incrusted with gold and precious
stones, the scenes from the works of the poet of the XII century, Nizami Gyanjavi
and the plots from the war and hunting life of medieval times have been depicted.?
The decorative work from metal has long been a popular and original kind of
decorative art in Azerbaijan and has a multi-century history. Yet, in the I
millennium BC on the territory of Azerbaijan, life objects and wares were made
from iron, copper, silver, and gold, distinguished for the virtuous mastery
of performance.
Having visited Azerbaijan, the famous traveler, Marko Polo (XIII century),
the son of jewelers descendants from Venice was amazed by the luxurious patterns
of decorative wares from metal ht saw here. Tne faHC masters throughout many
centuries passed and enriched the decorative and technical trapnons of their
craft from generation to generation. The fame of their art spread far beyondrthe
borders of Azerbaijan. Throughout the centuries, legends were made up about
the wonderful Azeri goldsmiths, armor and copper masters, who made fire and
cold weapons, various engraved vessels, jugs for watermen, cups, bowls, water-bottles,
thinly decorated with the quaint plant ornament for the whole of Near East.
