Otterndorf
For many years the North Sea coastal resort of Otterndorf has proven itself
as an art and culture destination, but also as a place where the residents know
how to party and enjoy letting their guests join in. Exhibitions, the series
of annual town hall concerts and the Otterndorf Organ Summer, plus readings
from some of the city's writers enhance its leisure offer.
In the summer months of June, July and August Otterndorf's night watchwoman
is out and about on the streets of the old town. After the big Schutzenfest
(Marksman's Festival) of the Hadler Schutzen- corps, every year in July the
"Gipfeltreffen der Enkel Odins," takes place. This is the Germanic
Pentathlon with "hordes" from all over Germany. For more than three
decades the last weekend in July has seen the Otterndorf old town festival take
place. August is dedicated to the "Cuxland Classics" and the exciting
soapbox race. The month ends with the big Volksbank triathlon.
The coastal marathon, which is given a lot of attention both in Germany and
abroad, takes place every year on World Children's Day in September, The cultural
year culminates in September with the "Voices of Europe" (concerts,
workshops, exhibitions with focus on the different countries). At the end of
September, beginning of October the kite festival attracts young and old to
the Otterndorf Grunstrand beach. The perfect end to the year is enjoyed with
the Advent torch swimming on the Saturday before the 1st Advent and the Otterndorf
Star Market on the 3rd Advent weekend.
