(Art Cinema)

This building, housing one of the first cinemas in Irkutsk (called Art decadence), was rebuilt in the style of Farce theater and occupies the entire small block on Grand Street between the 1st and 2nd Soldiers’ streets. The house was built by a company that sold wine and fruit in Siberia, owned by Turkish citizen K.S Yagdzhoglu who started a cinema here. In the quadrangle of the Cinema building he made a skating rink for the public.

In 1931 the first movies with sound were shown here and in 1936 the first color movie in colors was shown.

Today Art Cinema is a cultural and recreational center for the Baikal National University of Economics and Law. Since 1999 it has housed the Center of Russian Cinema, named after prominent Russian film director Leonid Gaiday.
