I.Guiller’s Commercial Appartment Building
(Alexander Vampilov’s Youth Theatre)
At the end of the 19th century the entrepreneur I. Guiller built a commercial
apartment block under the direction of architect Alexander Razgildeyev which
was later remodeled by architect Alexey Kuznetsov. The building used to house
various luxurious hotels, a restaurant, a cinema, a winter garden,as well as
various shops and boutiques. The history of the building reflects the history
of the city: after the 1917 Revolution it housed Admiral Kolchak’s government,
the 5th Red Army headquarters, trade unions, a military hospital and the city’s
youth theatre. In 1987 the youth theatre was named after prominent Russian play
writer Alexander Vampilov. The theatre is considered one of the best in Russia.
