Memorial Complex ‘Irkutsk Residents in the Patriotic War of 1941-1945’
This memorial complex is dedicated to Siberian soldiers who fell in battles
against the Nazis during World War II. The Memorial was built by architects
V.N. Fedorin and V.G. Smagin and was opened on May 8, 1975. The eternal flame
was lit with the torch relaid from the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Moscow
Kremlin wall. During the war 211 000 Irkutsk soldiers went to the front. 50
000 never returned home. The names of the 37 Irkutsk Heroes of the Soviet Union
are carved on the central back wall of the building of the Government of the
Irkutsk region. The bust of two-time hero of the Soviet Union, General Afanasy
Beloborodov was put here to commemorate his military talent and personal bravery
in the key battles of the Patriotic War. Every year on Victory Day celebrations
are held here in memory of the fallen soldiers. The bottom Quay
