Joshua Fineberg’s Mansion

(National Public Library named after Ivan Molchanov-Sibirsky)

This mansion was built in 1899-1901 by architect Alexey Kuznetsov for Irkutsk merchant and gold mine owner Joshua Fineberg, one of Irkutsk’s richest entrepreneurs, and a generous benefactor who participated in many public projects including the construction of the drama theatre and sponsorship of an industrial school. Since the beginning of the 20th century the mansion has housed various organizations, such as the Circum-Baikal Railway Construction Committee, a private school for young ladies, military headquarters, a museum and the IT Center of the East-Siberian Branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. In 1989, after a long restoration work, the Regional Library moved here.
