Merchant Sibiryakov’s Mansion

Merchant Sibiryakov’s Mansion, later the Residence of Governor General of Eastern Siberia (Research Library of Irkutsk State University)

The mansion known as ‘The White House’, was designed by the Italian architect Giacomo Quarenghi, in the style of Russian classicism. The fence, gate and trellis work of the balconies are in the same style. Originally, the Irkutsk merchant K.M.Sibiryakov built his three-storey stone house here, but it was soon burnt and destroyed. The present mansion is an exact copy of the previous one rebuilt by Sibiryakov in 1814-1821. In 1837 the house was purchased from the heirs by the regional government and became the residence of the Governor General of Eastern Siberia. In 1917 - 1918 this building housed The Central Executive Committee of Siberian Soviets (Centrosibir). In 1918 the Irkutsk State University was established and its first lectures were delivered in this building. Since 1939 the mansion has been housing the research library of the University which is considered one of the largest in the country. parkway Gagarina, 24
