Monument to Vladimir Lenin
Lenin Street runs through the very center of Irkutsk. Before 1858 the street
had been called Morskaya and Zamorskaya. In the beginning of the 19th century
it became one of the main streets of the city. In 1858, after signing the Aigun
treaty with China, which joined the Amur Region to Russia, the City Council
renamed Zamorskaya Street to Amurskaya Street. On November 5,1920 the City Council
of Workers and Red Army Deputies, at the request of residents renamed the street
again and it became Lenin Street. In 1952, on the site of the former Lutheran
Church a monument to Vladimir Lenin was erected by sculptor Nicolay Tomsky and
architect Lev Golubovsky. The bronze statue was cast at the Mint factory in
Leningrad. The original monument first appeared in Voronezh in 1940, and the
author’s replicas were then made for Leningrad, Vilnius and Irkutsk. traverse
