Indigenous peoples of the Khabarovsk region
There are 8 indigenous small-numbered peoples of the North living in the Khabarovsk
Territory: the Nanai, the Ulchi, the Nivkh, the Negidals, the Udege, the Oroch,
the Evens and the Evenks. Their ethnic history goes back to the distant past.
They were able to adapt to the harsh living conditions in the northern taiga
region by rationally creating dwellings, clothing, means of transportation,
and craft tools, which were preserved until the twentieth century. The main economic trades for the peoples living settled on the banks of the
Amur were fishing and hunting. And only the Evens and the Evenks were engaged
in taiga reindeer husbandry and led a nomadic lifestyle. The main summer means
of transportation for the Amur peoples were boats, and the winter - skis and
dog sleds.
