Lebanon
Situated along the eastern side of the Mediterranean Sea, Lebanon Benefits from
its strategic position in this land of the Levant.
Being the crossroad of 3 continents ( Europe - Africa - Asia ), this ancient
terrain that goes back to the tertiary age was the witness of the work of time
and people.
Firstly called Leb-Nen; Meaning white and fertile, it preserved its name after
5000 long crucial years of stmggle; when same of the most important civilizations
of the world such as the Egyptians, Assyrians, Babylonians* Persians, Greek
And Roman etc. All wanted to control this small jewel.
This gives you an idea of the historical richness of the country, which is
also reflected in its people. Already the Canaanites - the autochthones of the
land - arrived to become the provides of merchandise to many neighboring nations,
and they were known later on by the Greeks as Phoenicians and their descendents
the actual Lebanese are still carrying on the same track to be known as the
best traders of the world establishing the link between the East and the West.
Beirut (Lebanon's Capital)
Built on a rock promontory, it seems that this city was destined to become an
important one and later on the Capital of the country where 1,200,000 inhabitants
live.
Don’t miss the visit of the Raouche Rocks known by the French "Grotte au
Pigeons" and the project of rebuilding the old downtown center.
Beirut could combine the glory of the Past with the expectations of the Future,
thus; deserving its name "Beirut, the ancient city of the future..."
Deir Qamar (40 Km South East of Beirut)
"Monastery of the Moon", we could say that it was the capital of Lebanon
during the 17th century because it was chosen by the governor of Lebanon Fakhreddine
II to be his main residence.
Beiteddine (45 Km South of Beirut)
Beiteddine palace (The House of Faith) is the jewel of Lebanese architecture.
The Summer retreat of the president of the Republic since the .. independence.
It was also, opened to the public where many artifacts are exhibited in its
museums.
Sidon (40 Km South of Beirut)
Built by the Son of Canaan, Sidonia could be one of the oldest Phoenician cities
in the country.
Jezine (22 Km from Sidon)
Lies the most famous touristic resort of South Lebanon: Jezzine. It is well-known
because of its beautiful landscape, it's 40m high waterfall and historical monuments
such as the St. Antoine Convent.
Eshmoun (4 Km from Sidon)
A very romantic site at almost 4 Kms from Sidon. Its temple is the only Phoenician
one that is preserved from the 6th Century BC.
Cana of Galilee (19 Km from Sidon)
Long venerated by local Christians as a holy site, one can see the small cave
where tradition says Jesus rested. It's believed that in that place, Jesus performed
the first miracle: changing water to Wine (Wedding of Cana).
Khaizaran (12 Km from Sidon)
Located between Tyre and Sidon, famous by its well-known restaurants along the
coast serving fresh fish and seafood with delicious Lebanese mezzes. It has
a very famous Hotel in the area (Mounes Hotel).
Tyre (25 Km from Sidon)
In 1979, UNESCO declared Tyre a world heritage site because of the variety of
historical monuments.
Baalbeck (85 Km north east of Beirut)
Also called Heliopolis (the City of sun) during the Greek period. This cultural
city par excellence offers breathtaking sight of the some of the most spectacular
Roman Ruin: the Temple of Jupiter heliopolitanus, Bachus and Venus. |
