The castle in Przemysl
The castle in Przemysl was erected in about 1340 by Kazimierz the Great. Damaged
and changed many times,, it has lost its Gothic character. It owes its present
appearance to the head of the Przemysl region (starosta) - Piotr Kmita, who
in 1514 -1553 erected a Renaissance castle/ and to Marcin Krasicki/ who in 1616
- 1631 transformed it/ giving it the appearance not only of a fortress/ but
also ofa residence. "Today/ beautifully renewed/ it houses The Aleksander
Fredro "Fredreum" Drama Society - one of the oldest artistic societies
in Europe. In the castle courtyard the foundations of a Romanesque rotunda with
an apse and pallatium were found/ which date from the reign of Bolesfaw Chrobry.
The second of the Royal castles can be seen in Sanok. Similarly to the Przemysl
castle/ it was erected by King Kazimierz the Great/ and owing to its transformation
in the XVI century it gained a Renaissance style. The refurbished castle presently
houses the History Museum/ which delights inacollection of icons.
