The History of Rostov Region

The Don region has rich history and culture, full of specific traditions and customs.

Lower Don has special geographic position. In the past it was crossed by the migrating tribes’ routs and it played a great role in the history of the population of the South Russian steppes and marked all spheres of national  culture of the region.

This big land has bright and rich history. It remembers Gunes’ Tribes invasions, destroying blossoming cities, stood against Khan Batij and Khan Tamerlan army. Here in Don Land Prine Sviatoslav won against Khazar Tribes.

Famous Razin, Boulavin, Pougatchev were collecting their national peasants armies against the monarchy.

The Glory of Russian Military Fleet of Tzar Peter the First was born here. Don Land still remembers the heroes of 1905 year Rostov Strike, 5th Guard  Don Cossack Corpus. The name of Rostov region is connected with the most famous names of Russia : Tchekhov, Serafimovytch, Saryan, Sholokhov, Grekov and others.

Don Steppe was often fired by the Cossack and peasants’ strikes. Here a lot of wars against monarchy being led by famous Stepan Razin, Kondratij Boulavin and Emelian Pougatchev started.

1941 – 1943 Don were involved in the fierce battles with German invaders trying to make their way to Volga and Caucasus Region. Mostly all the Rostov Region Territory was under the invasion.

Rostov Region is often called the Land of the Still Don Waters. It means a lot of gardens and endless steppe scopes, mines, seas and channels . If to go into the past – Don was the main river – not Volga . Here in ancient times Russian Fleet was born.

Pushkin and Tolstoy, Lermontov and Tchekhov, Gorky and Seraphymovytch, Fadeev and Sholokhov, Fadeev and Sholokhov – these and other famous names which made the Russian cultural history and are the glory of our motherland are connected with Don Land.
