Novocherkassk Museum of the Don Cossacks' History, the oldest Museum in tt
South of Russia was opened on November 22, 1899. Its creation was initiated!
progressive public of the Don region. Museum building was designed I A. A.
Yashchenko, Academician of Architecture. On the birthday of Heir Czar (futi
Nikolay 11), on May 6 the foundation of museum building took place. The constn
tion was funded by public contributions and money allocated by the Cossac
treasury. The first museum in the territory of the Don Cossack Army was called!
Don Museum. First collections in the Don Museum consisted in material and
documentary items from the Don Cossacks' Army Repository as well as military
regaliaC the Don Cossacks, banners and letters of honour granted to the Army
for partiapi tion in extraterritorial wars of Russia. With time other collections
appeared in the museum: paleontological, archeological, mineralogical, and
a numismatic one.
In 1941 Nazis' occupation caused noticeable damage to the museum Duni| the
post-war period museum funds were replenished with the works of a famoa Don
landscape artist I. I. Krylov; from Leningrad in accordance with the last
will: Academician N. N. Dubrovsky a collection of his works was passed together
will collection of paintings made by the Wanderers. In 1946 the museum received
ba samples taken away during the Civil War.
Today the Novocherkassk Museum of the Don Cossacks' History offers to itsvi
itors the richest museum collection of unique components. A special place
inti collection is occupied by the relics of the Don Cossacks linked to the
best traditid of that estate: samples of cold steel of the XVI11-XIX centuries
marked with wfl derful artistic decorations and beauty, decorative arms of
generals and officers of Don Cossacks' Army. The museum takes pride in its
collection of banners, hoiS tails and regimental standards of the Don Cossacks
belonging to the XVIII-XXce furies. Battle banners were manufactured using
the money of the Don Cossac Army or separate Cossacks' regiments, they were
kept at army headquarters a thereafter — at the Army chancellery.
Collection of items characterizing decorative and applied arts allows to
recef some idea of the culture of the Cossack city inhabitants.
At present the Museum of the Don Cossacks' History is a complete museum complex,
including the following branches as its essential parts: the Chiel Palace;
Museum House of landscape artist I.I. Krylov, memorial Museum House M. B.
Grekov.
