Taganrog
Taganrog is located on the Taganrog Bay shores and it is 60 km from Rostov-on-Don.
Population – 283.2 thousand people.
Taganrog is one of the cultural centers of Russia and it is sometimes called
“the pearl of the South Region”. There are a lot of historical and architectural
monuments in the center of the city. Almost all streets in Taganrog lead down
to the sea. The city was built under the decision of Tzar Peter on the desert
cape which was called Tagan-Rog. The history of the city starts in 1648. Taganrog
is one of the biggest Sea Ports in the South of Russia. A lot of great and
famous people lived and worked here: Tchaikovsky, Paustovsky, Pushkin, Tchekhov,
Shmidt, Durov.
Tchekhov’s House is visited by more than 200 thousand of tourists annually.
In this house the great Russian writer was born, lived, studied and worked
for several years. When you enter the house you feel the atmosphere of the
past.
The Museum of Architecture which is known also as Alferaki Palace is another
place of interest in Taganrog . This palace itself is the architecture monument.
It was built in 1912 under the design of F.O. Shekhtel.
Taganrog Art Gallery has one of the biggest art collections in South of Russia.
There is another place of interest in Taganrog – the Museum of famous Durov’s
circus dynasty. The Museum has specific circus atmosphere.
Taganrog is located on the high cape. The city appearance associates with
the form of the boat. It is one of the most beautiful cities in South of Russia.
