Taganrog state literatural and historycal-architectural reserve museum
Taganrog is a museum city. Founded in 1698 by Peter I, the city preserved
historical places, related to his name. Taganrog is the homeland of A P. Chekov.
His literary and social activities are inseparable from the city. There are
several Chekhov's museums in the city: memorial house of A P. Chekhov, A P.
Chekhov Literary Museum, "Chekhov's' Shop". Their exhibits include
real personal things of the writer, his literary works, his library.
The basis of museum collection is formed by funds of well-known historical
personalities. The Museum keeps unique real things, which used to belong to
Alexander I, poet N. V. Kukolnik, compiler of Russian heraldry A B. Lakier,
circus artist A A Durov, actress F. G. Ranevskaya. children's writer I. D.
Vasilenko.
Museum funds contain also collection of rare books of the XV-XX centuries,
collection of decorative and applied arts, china, and furniture.
Alferaki Palace is a pearl of city architecture housing at present the Museum
of local lore studies.
City surrounded by sea from three sides is characterized by perfect climate
conditions. The most interesting literary-memorial and historical-architectural
complex attracts annually more and more tourists from Russia, distant and
nearest foreign countries.
