Pyatigorsk was found in 1780. A good combination of curative springs of Mt.
Mashuk, the highly effective medicinal muds of LakeTambukan, the favourable
climatic conditions and the wonderful landscapes contributed to the development
of the city as a health resort. The Emperor Alexander I issued an Eddict on
arranging special establishments near the mineral springs for providing successful
treatment. By this Eddict in 1803 the area of Caucasian Mineral Waters was declared
national property.
In our city autumn is usually long, warm and dry. It is the wonderful season,
"so charming to the eyes" (as our poet Pushkin wrote), especially
favourable for rest and recreation.
The local mineral waters in combination with medicinal muds really make wonders
and help to get rid of many ailments, the diseases of the locomotor apparatus,
the digestive tract, the cardio-vascular system, gynaecological and skin illnesses
and of nervous breakdowns. And even, as the popular opinion goes the delaing
the ageing process. Pyatigorsk has managed to preserve the buildings, monuments
and the daily round of bygone times. The names of the leading figures of the
Russian literature A. Pushkin, L.Tolstoy, of many outstanding writers, artists,
composers, actors, doctors, scientists connected with this city. A particular
tribute of respect is given to the inspired bard Caucasus - poet M. Lermontov.

small territory (60x30 km) one can find over 120 mineral springs of 12 various
types. The famous Tambukan lake, a «depositary» of curative mud,
is situated at a distance of 10 km from Pyatigorsk.
The curative power of these places has been well-known since ancient times.
The first written references of them date back to the middle of the 14th century.
