Hittite Religion
Hittite religion is formed by many elements with various ethnic roots. As
an Indo-European community the Hittites accepted many elements that fitted their
culture from other cultures that they encountered. In polytheistic religions
many elements of nature were deified such as water, sky, earth, moon and sun.
The belief system of the Hittites also includes representations of natural elements
such as the Sun Goddess, the Sky-Tempest God, the Crops Protection God, etc.
Thus one could say the Hittite religion is a religion based on nature with many
facets. The gods and goddesses of Hittites typically are much like humans. Their
physical appearances and souls resemble those of mankind, they eat and drink,
they help humans when they are shown respect, and they take revenge and punish
mankind severely when they are not treated well. The principal god of Hittite
is the Tempest God Teshup, the King rules the country in the name of the Tempest
God.
