Kyzkos
The Ancient City of Kyzkos famous for its Magnificent Buldings and Richness
Kyzkos which according to the writers of antiquty was the first colony bult
on the shores of Marmara, was famous for its harbors, temple, theatre, wine,
olive oil, marible, coins and perfume.
So much So that Floras talks about the city as: ' The city of Kyzkos dignifies
the shore of Asa with its luxurous buildings the richness of its ports, its
castle, its cty walls and towers.'
Kyzkos, whch was located n the north of the swamps between Kapdag peninsula's
(ancient city of Arktonnessos) Eridek and Bandrma bays south of the Marmara
sea, is called 'Belks' and 'Balkz' today.
The settlements in the regon started in the Neolithic era (6 thousand B.C.)
and continued in the Chalicolthic era (5 thousand B.C.)
The Dolons which settled in the skirts of Olympos (Uludag) in Mysa is the oldest
tribes to have lived in Kyzkos. That's why the region is called Dolona or Dolons.
The city takes its name from Kyzkos, King of Dolon who was killed at a young
age.
For a while it was a colony of Miletus (Soke-village of Balat), one of ona's
most important cites. After the fall of the rich state of Lyda, to which Kyzkos
was bound, in 546 B.C by Cyrus, it has gone under the rule of the Persans, the
Macedonians and the Romans in that order.
After the founder of the city King Kyzkos sezed Arteka (Erdek) in 362 B.C,
Kyzkos became an mportant trade center. With its 25 kilometer area, being larger
than Efes, it was the region's capital. During the Roman rule, the Roman Emperor
had state (money) imprinted for this city (297 A.D). These mones were the most
valuable and well-known currency of ther time.
