Julfar
Welcome to Julfar “Passing Dibba there is another (town) called Julfar which
is a very big place where there are many and honourable people. There are great
merchants. ..along the coast there are three or four other ports, which is a
very big place" (Vasco da Gama, Portuguese explorer, 1498) The port city
of Julfar and a few other ports as described by Vasco da Gama were big enough
to offer hospitality to great merchants of the world. These merchants were able
to trade and to develop enough understanding to create market specifics products
that continues to later time. Some of these products are celadon plates from
China and Indochina that and also 19th century plate from Maastricht (the 'Netherlands)
with Islamic symbol decoration.
Glass Bangles Hundreds of fragments of glass bangles have been found at Julfar,
the Persian camps andother coastal sites. The plain black circlet designjsthe
most common. The bangles may have been imported into Ras Al Khaimah. The possible
locations where these coufd have been made include Khuzistan in southern.!ran,
Kawd am Saila in Aden, and Bramhapuri and Nevasa in India (from the 16th century
onwards). julfar imported various celadon and stone wares from the Far East
The best quality celadon was that made at Lung Chuan in southern China and examples
dating to the early 15th century are known from Julfar and Dhayah.
