Ostrogozhsk
Ostrogozhsk Is one of the most culturally advanced cities of the Voronezh Region.
The local natives are somewhat similar to the people of Saint Petersburg in
terms of social finesse. A great Russian artist Ivan Kramskoy was born here.
The fund* collected from commercial folk festivals that became common by the
end of the 19th century were committed to charities.
In 1906. the Town Commercial Meeting built a theatre with the capacity of 600
seats...
After the Revolution the park went through turbulent times, II saw desolation
and neglect.. But the main gate was always open as if In hope for a better time
to come. And now the public garden, property restored, is a favorite among the
people of Ostfp- gozhsk. While the main gate, now ever a hundred years old,
welcomes adults and the children ef a new generation. This magic gate opens
the way for the past and the future alike. It Is an architectural pearl and
a symbol of continuity of the Russian history, a local pride and the most distinctive
feature of an old Russian town of Ostrogozhsk.

This cultural advancement and tact is in the people, the architecture of the
old town, and In the history of the public garden, the most striking feature
of the town. The unique red and white main gate built in 1908, leads into the
glorious and enviable past...
The noble family of Tevyashovs granted some of the lands they owned to the municipality
in the 19th century, and, in 1863, a brick building of the Vauxhall pleasure
garden was con- struc J (a Pavlovsk «Vauxhall garden» that witnessed a dramatic
meeting of Duke Myshkin and Nastasya Filippovna described in Dostoyevsky* idiot
immediately comes to mind). It was a venue for music, dances, games, and romantic
rendezvouses.
Twenty years later the public garden was enhanced by a sylvan theatre with a
refreshments area and, a little later, a restaurant was opened.
1898 saw the onset of the activities of a prominent amateur company managed
by Mr. Levitskiy, a passionate theatre enthusiast.
