Kotlas

Kotlas district is situated in the south eastern part of Arkhangelsk district at the place of confluence of two rather big rivers: the Small Northern Dvina and the Vychegda. The district borders on Krasnoborsk, Viled, Lenskii, and Ustyan districts of Arkhangelsk region and also on Vologda and Kirov regions. The area of the district is 6,3 thousand square kilometers, with the population of 22,1 thousand people. The administrative centre is town Kotlas. The distance to the regional centre is 590 kilometers.

Kotlas district is one of the unique territories of Arkhangelsk region because of the number of history and culture monuments, the number of which comes to forty units. The most remarkable are situated in the town-museum Solvychegodsk. There are the Conventional Church of Dormition (Vvedensky Cathedral), the working church with the magnificent icon wall of seven tiers, and the Annunciation Cathedral (Blagovesshensky cathedral), the most valuable monument of Russian stone architecture with kept frescos of the sixteen century. In the complex of this cathedral one can see and visit the Solvychegodsk history and arts museum, where there are unvaluable exhibits – the witnesses of pick of arts of Usolye masters. The Sacred churches of Turovets is another culture treasure of Kotlas district.

Kotlas territory is home place of N.G. Kuznetcov, the Admiral of Fleet of the Soviet Union, The Commissar of River Fleet of the USSR Z.A. Shaskov was also born in Kotlas district. It is the place of birth of E.P. Khabarov, who discovered and mastered Siberia, in the XVII th century. The history of forming of Russian North was described of their life feats: Stephany of Perm, the outstanding reformer of Russia: S.V.Vitte, and the Russian Hercules V.Shul.

The special resources potential of the district are the spiritual history values of the area, the health restoring resources, the virgin plots of districtnature, the kind and open soul hospitality of local people.

The memorial military victories of the intervention period, of GULAG times in Kotlas area, the soldiers feat and labour victories during the Great Patriotic War are carefully kept and passed to the new generations of Kotlas people. Today Kotlas Is a big transport and an Industrial centre, supporting and cooperating in united efforts of neighboring regions.

The lines of the Horth Railway roads connect Kotlas with Vologda, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Arkhangelsk, Kirov, Syktyvkar, Vorkuta. The building and functioning of the newly built automobile bridge made Kotlas a very important place in the federal auto transportation corridor of international importance. This highway joined Syktyvkar and Kirov highway and connected the territories of the Urals and Komi Republic with the ports of the White Sea.
